2023 American History Contest

The Charlotte Parkhurst Chapter, NSDAR, in Folsom is sponsoring the DAR American History Essay Contest for all Folsom and El Dorado Hills students in grades 5–8. Students in public, private, parochial, or those who are homeschooled are also eligible to submit their essays. Length 300-1,000 words (depending on grade level, please check forms).

The 2023 Essay Topic: On May 14, 1897, John Phillip Sousa played his new march “The Stars and Stripes Forever."  This song would become the national march of the United States on December 11, 1897. Imagine it is 1897 and you are a newspaper reporter for The Philadelphia Times. Your newspaper editor has asked you to write an article about the song being performed that day. Your article needs to tell us about Sousa’s life and the story behind the song. It is the first performance of the song, so make sure your article includes your thoughts about the music and how the audience reacts to what is seen and heard that day.

All participants will receive a certificate of participation. One essay at each grade level will be selected as the chapter winner. Winners at each grade level will receive a bronze medal and their essay will be advanced to the California State DAR American History Chair for further competition opportunities. Maybe your essay will win the National award!

Students must submit their essays to the Charlotte Parkhurst Chapter, NSDAR, at AmericanHistoryEssayDAR@gmail.com on or before November 6, 2023. Submissions will be electronic only. All essays must be submitted to a local chapter electronically by a teacher, school or individual student. Please do not forget to include the Contest Submission Form.

We are passionate about educating America’s youth. The DAR website offers many different resources. Teachers and students are encouraged to explore these resources and take advantage of the different programs DAR offers. The American History Essay Contest is just one way we encourage young people to think creatively about our nation's great history.

American History Essay Contest Results 

2023-
2024

Two students, one in grade five and one in grade eight were awarded bronze medals for their winning essays titled "Stars and Stripes Forever." One participant won the District II level competition and moved onto the state level.

2022-2023

Two students, one in grade five and one in grade eight were awarded bronze medals for their winning essays titled, "Delegate to Second Continental Congress: How will the essential actions of a good citizen (dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism) help meet the challenges that America faces in this decade?" Both participants won the District II level competition and moved onto the state level.

2021-2022

Four students in grades 5 to 8 from area middle schools were awarded bronze medals for their winning essays, marking the 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier’s dedication. 

 


2023 Junior Membership Helen Pouch Memorial Fund Classroom Grant

The Charlotte Parkhurst Chapter, NSDAR, in Folsom is sponsoring the Junior Membership (Helen Pouch Memorial Fund) Classroom Grant. Please download the following information to learn more and apply for a $500 grant. Classroom Grants Overview:

  • Two $500 grants are available for each state and the District of Columbia!
  • Applicants must be a classroom teacher for grades kindergarten through 12th grade, must be endorsed by a local DAR chapter, and complete the grant award application.  
  • Each chapter may only endorse one application.
  • Grants must directly impact students and may not be used for continuing education/workshops for the teacher. 
  • It is important to note that the proposed projects must directly benefit students in the classroom. Funds may be used for supplies and educational resources, but the applicant must detail how these items help to further the educational goals of the DAR, see Education | Daughters of the American Revolution (dar.org)

 2024 DAR American Revolution Legacy Grant

The Charlotte Parkhurst Chapter, NSDAR, in Folsom is sponsoring the DAR American Revolution Legacy Grant Program for preK-16 teachers and administrators. The DAR American Revolution Legacy Grant is a one-time award of up to $5,000, and smaller projects are encouraged. Up to 20 grants will be awarded during the 2024 grant program (for use during the 2024-25 school year). To learn more, go to Legacy Grant.  

Teachers or administrators must submit their application to the Charlotte Parkhurst Chapter, NSDAR, on or before March 1, 2024. Please contact us for a mailing address.

DAR Youth Citizenship Medal

The DAR Youth Citizenship Medal is for a boy or girl in grades 5 through 11. (One medal per grade per school.) The medal may also be awarded to youth service and patriotic organizations, or members, who fulfill the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism, such as scouts, police cadets, and other community service organizations. This medal is approved at the chapter level. 

Each recipient will receive the DAR Youth Citizenship Medal and certificate from the awarding chapter based on a local chapter write-up and approval.

Our chapter reaches out to multiple schools in our community for student nominees to receive the award. However, if you know of a deserving youth, please contact us.

 

 


 2023 DAR Historic Preservation Grants

The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution awards grants for Historic Preservation, the maximum grant is $10,000, Flyer.

Applications for the next round of grants, to be awarded in May 2024, will be accepted August 1 – October 31, 2023.  Grant applications must be submitted through our online application portal. The portal will open for applications on August 1, 2023, more information.

 2024 Educational Opportunities for Native Americans Grants

The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution awards grants for a project or program that provides educational opportunities for Native Americans and may include formal education, healthcare programs and other topics. A detailed explanation must accompany the grant application stating how this program will help to further the goals of NSDAR - Historic Preservation, Education and Patriotism.

Applications for the next round of grants, to be awarded in May 2024, will be accepted between September 1 - December 31, 2023. Grant applications must be submitted through our chapter.

2024 American Indian Scholarships

The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution awards three scholarships for college-bound Indian youth. The application process is entirely online through Academic Works portal.  

Available scholarships include:

1. The American Indian Scholarship for $4,000.00 (may be more than one awarded each year) which requires a 3.25 GPA and has a deadline of January 31. 

2.The Frances Crawford Marvin American Indian Scholarship (one awarded per year) with a 3.25 GPA requirement and a variable award sum determined annually by the return on the endowment and has a deadline of January 31. 

3. The Anne Trevarthen Memorial Scholarship is a one-time scholarship presented each April to a high school senior who will be attending the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.  The scholarship amount is based on the annual return of the endowment and is administered by the college.
